The Mid-Lifers next chapter

ben and lucy's backpacking adventure

There’s something wildly humbling about watching your eldest shoulder a backpack and disappear into the world.

At the airport in Hong Kong, after our time in Thailand, we stood at that familiar fork in the road. Jim, Andrew and I turned toward the gate that would take us home. Ben and Lucy turned toward theirs — bound for Australia, Fiji, and New Zealand — and the beginning of their own travel chapter.

It’s a strange parental moment. Pride sitting right beside a lump in your throat. You spend years guiding them through airports, double-checking passports, carrying the extra bag. And then one day, they’re the ones adjusting their packs, checking departure boards, and walking — confidently — into the wide, waiting world.

This is their journey — entirely different from ours.

They’re standing at the beginning of what may become a lifetime of exploration — discovering that travel isn’t simply about photographing an iconic skyline or checking a landmark off a list, but about understanding that every culture carries its own customs, values, and ways of seeing the world… and allowing those encounters to quietly expand their own.

It’s about choosing the longer ferry route. Sleeping in the 22-bed dorm. Taking public transit to a local rugby match. Hiking the unsigned trail because someone at breakfast mentioned the view at the top.

It’s being invited into a small-town church service you would have never have known about — sitting quietly, observing traditions that have shaped a place for generations, and feeling grateful simply to witness them.

It’s discovering that the world reveals itself most honestly off the main road — in the less-travelled paths, the shared tables, the conversations with strangers who become friends for a night.

And perhaps most beautifully, it’s realizing that travel isn’t simply the sights to take in.

It’s something that quietly, steadily, changes you.
