Trastevere : we skipped it as a family, and I regret that. My girlfriend and I went back twice. The energy is lively, the streets are beautiful, and the food is outstanding.

Venice: Be sure to rent a gondola. Reservations are not necessary even in high season. Wait for a ride on the Grande Canal may be longer than pick up spots on smaller canals.

In many tourist areas, people in costume will approach you for photos. What isn’t always obvious is that they expect payment afterward. We have a great photo from Villa Borghese with a group of “gladiators,” but the request for money afterward created an uncomfortable situation.
