The Mid-Lifers

good to know in greece

Don’t Flush Toilet Paper
In many areas (especially islands like Santorini, Paros, smaller villages), plumbing systems are older and narrower. Used paper goes in the bin provided. It feels strange at first — but it’s completely normal there, and it's easily normalized after a day or two.

Ferry Travel Requires Flexibility
Island hopping is wonderful and a great way to view islands — but ferries can be delayed due to wind. Build buffer time especially if connecting to flights.

Pack Light for the Islands
Many hotels (particularly in Santorini) involve steep walkways, uneven cobblestones, and stairs. Rolling large suitcases can be a workout. We bought back packs from MEC which have proven very useful to our travels.

It Gets Very Hot in Summer
We travelled in late June - and it was HOT.  July and August are apparently intense. Plan sightseeing early morning or late afternoon. Definitely do not do any major hiking midday.  Midday is for shade, swimming, or long lunches.

Tipping is Appreciated but Modestly
5–10% at restaurants is generous but not mandatory. Round up taxis.

Cash is Best when possible
Cards are widely accepted, but smaller tavernas, beach bars, or ferry kiosks may prefer cash.

Dinner is Late
Greeks dine later than many North Americans. Restaurants often don’t fill up until 8:30–10:00 pm.

Reserve in Advance in High Season
Especially for restaurants, beach clubs, tours, and ferries.

Wind is Real
On islands like Paros and Santorini, strong wind is common. Bring a light layer — even in summer.
