The Mid-Lifers

things to know abut iceland....

Icelandair

Icelandair made getting there easy, with direct routes from Toronto. The planes are Boeing Max 8s, so they’re a bit smaller, but the flight is only about five hours — just enough time to settle in before you’re descending over lava fields.

Cars & Getting Around

Especially in winter, renting an SUV is a smart choice — and a surprising number are electric or hybrid. Between unpredictable weather and wide open landscapes, a larger vehicle simply makes sense. We used GO Car Rental and had a seamless experience. Having your own car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace — and in Iceland, that flexibility is everything.

Weather & Daylight

December and March feel very different.

In December, you’re living in near darkness — up to 22 hours a day — which sounds intense but feels strangely magical against Iceland’s lunar-like landscape.

March brings more daylight, but we experienced a fair bit of rain. The trade-off? Longer exploring hours, but wetter conditions. Pack layers regardless. Always layers.

Icelandic Wool

Icelandic wool is the real deal — lightweight, incredibly warm, and built for this climate. After regretting not buying sweaters on our first trip, we didn’t hesitate the second time. They’re an investment, but one you won’t regret. Just be careful with cleaning — mine shrunk a full size, even at the dry cleaner.

Alcohol

Alcohol is expensive and only sold in government-run stores called Vínbúðin. If you enjoy a drink, consider purchasing at duty free upon arrival — many travellers do (so did we!).

Geothermal Swimming Pools

Swimming pools in Iceland aren’t just pools — they’re part of daily life. These geothermally heated outdoor pools are central to Icelandic culture.
Bring a bathing suit. Always.

Hot Dogs

Do not leave without trying an Icelandic hot dog. Simple. Iconic. Delicious.

There are fewer stands in the city than I expected. The famous stand near the cathedral often has very long lines — but give yourself the time. It’s one of those small Icelandic experiences that’s worth it.
